90% Silver Coins – History
“90% Silver” references certain pre-1965 dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollars. Investors, collectors, buyers, sellers, etc use this term specifically for:

Additionally, this term also differentiates these coins from 40% Silver and current circulating coins. 1965-1970 coins contained 40% Silver. Current circulating coins do not contain silver.
Coins prior to 1965 contained 90% Silver. Silver was the supreme choice because it was affordable. Also – the cost of producing these coins fell well below their face value.
However, due to the Coinage Act of 1965, silver usage in coins was reduced or obliterated. Why? Silver prices were on the rise at this time in history. Plus, the U.S. Mint’s supply of Silver was low. Thus, creating the need for the Act. As a result, quarters and dimes no longer contain any Silver. Instead now composed of layers of Copper-Nickel and pure Copper. Silver half dollars were reduced to 40% Silver.
