The People’s Republic of China created a series of gold bullion coins. The Chinese Gold Pandas. Chinese Gold Panda coins can be confused with Chinese medals. These medals also use pandas in their design. However, the traditional Gold Panda utilizes the Temple of Heaven on the obverse of every coin. With the phrase, “Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo.” Which means “People’s Republic of China. On the bottom, it includes the date. If it is a commemorative coin, it will also list the theme by the date.

From Coining to Now

The Official Mint of the People’s Republic of China introduced the panda gold bullion coins in 1982. Symbolizing their nation. They are, and have remained, a 99.9% fine gold coin. These coins come in a variety of sizes. From 120 to 1 oz. (and larger!). Issued in proof/brilliant uncirculated quality.

Chinese Gold Panda coin designs change yearly. Except for 2002. There was a freeze on the design and the 2002 Gold Panda coins were identical to the 2001 version. When collectors rebuffed, the People’s Republic of China lifted the freeze and reverted to their original policy – change the design yearly. (Hence the powerful world of investing in gold coins!)

Notably, unlike coins made by U.S. mints, Chinese mints do not employ mint marks. However, in certain years there are minor variations—in the size of the date, style of the temple, etc.—in the coin design. Thus, determining the originating mint, just got a little easier.

Also, of note, 2015 was the only year the Gold Panda did not have its weight and purity stamped. Could this be because of the 2016 changes that, at the time, were about to take place?

In 2016 China changed the weight system. Thus replacing the troy ounce. Troy ounces to the metric system of grams. Which is the standard system of weights in the People’s Republic of China.
