Historical Overview – The Silver Lining:
As a response to the Coinage Act of 1873, Silver Certificates were first issued in 1878. The Coinage Act of 1873 aimed to end bimetallism in America. Instead, implementing a gold standard. Consequentially upsetting many Americans. Private citizens and businesses alike.
By 1875, businesses were investing in silver. As an effort to restore bimetallism. Congressional representatives from silver-rich states began lobbying to preserve silver. One of their state’s main means of maintaining economic prosperity. Thus spurring discussions within Congress.
Finally reaching a compromise on Feb. 28, 1878 with the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase a minimum amount of silver. Requiring to put it into circulation as silver dollars, now known as the Silver Certificate.
The Bland-Allison – Silver Certificate Transactions
Circulation of the first silver certificates began. Denominations of $10 to $1,000. Financial institutions found them more convenient to hold. As compared to coins. Yet not all transactions accepted them. There were restrictions. The Bland-Allison Act deemed silver certificates to be receivable for taxes, public dues, and customs. However, they were not valid for individual or private transactions.
The National Banking Act, signed on July 12, 1882, alleviated some of these restrictions. Therefore, authorizing them in lawful reserves of national banks. Later converted into denominations of $5 or less under a separate act in 1886.
By 1896, the issuance of the $20, $50, $100, $500, and $1000 Silver Certificates ceased. Later resulting in little, if any, to be found in existence still today.
In May 1927, a committee recommended a size reduction of U.S. banknotes. Spurring a complete redesign as well. New, smaller silver certificates issued on July 10, 1929.
By the outbreak of World War II, people saw changes made to the silver certificate. As well as its denominations. The demand for silver bullion steadily rose. Continuing over the course of three decades. By which directly followed the Silver Purchase Act of 1934.

Silver Certificate – Death Immortalized
However, that all changed on May 25, 1964. Redemption for silver dollars/coins ceased. How so? Well, the government repealed The Silver Purchase Act of 1934. Along with other metal and coin acts. This led to silver certificates’ retirement from circulation. In 1964, silver certificates became obsolete.
Subsequently, prompting another Act of Congress on June 24, 1967. Providing certificate exchange for silver bullion once again.
But only for a period of one year. Which lasted until June 24, 1968.
Since then, they have only been redeemable in Federal Reserve notes since 1968. Although they are still legal tender today. Vermillion Enterprises is still interested in purchasing yours.
