The Silver Grade

1. .999 Fine Silver

The closest Silver to the purest element of Silver. 99.9% Pure. Silver is soft and easily malleable. The purer Silver is, the easier it is to bend, break, scratch, or mar. Typically Copper, an alloy metal, is added. Used to provide enough stability and durability.

2. Sterling .925 Silver

.925 Silver is the most common Silver in Silver Jewelry. .925 Silver is Sterling Silver. It consists of 92.5% Silver and 7.5% Copper. Nickel and Zinc are used as well.

3. Coin Silver – 90% Silver

Coin Silver refers to Silver made from coins. Early U.S. coins contained 90% Silver – we sell those too by the way! At one point, when Silver spot prices were so high, many chose to turn their coins in for melting, which some metal smiths turned around and created new silver jewelry out of. Coins in production today are not made of silver. Typically made of mostly copper and nickel (used to give it that silver look) instead. However, there are many coins available in 1 oz. rounds that could be used as currency if need be. I.e. The American Silver Eagle, The Canadian Silver Maple Leaf, Silver Krugerrand, etc.

4. Silver Toned

Jewelry can be sold as “silver”. This often refers to the COLOR of the jewelry and NOT the material used. It has the look of Silver, but contains no Silver. Jewelry artists and manufacturers alike will stamp their pieces indicating it is Silver. i.e. .925 or .900 or .999 and not just describing the color of the jewelry.

5. Silver Filled

Silver filled jewelry consists of a layer of durable sterling silver bonded to a copper-alloy or brass-alloy center. It is thicker and more durable than silver plated. The quality is dependent on the thickness of this layer. Silver filled items look identical to sterling silver.  Silver Filled jewelry is typically only 5% – 10% Silver. However, many manufacturers will use the stamp “.925 SF”. Which can be misleading due to the .925. However, ONLY the 5% – 10% Silver filling is .925 Silver.

6. Silver Plated

Silver-plated jewellery is less expensive than sterling silver but equally beautiful. The jewellery is created from a different metal, usually brass, zinc alloy or copper, and then coated with a layer of silver. When the coating of silver flakes or scrapes off, the base metal underneath is revealed. While it may not tarnish the same as Sterling Silver, because it typically does not contain Copper, it will still tarnish. Silver plated Jewelry is mostly found in Costume Jewelry. Usually it will not have a stamp indicating it is Silver Plated; however, many times it will bear the manufacturers logo.
