The Who, What, When, Where, and Why of Australian Gold Lunar Series

The Perth Mint started the Lunar Series in honor of the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Many people have followed and been influenced by the Chinese Lunar calendar for thousands of years.

The Chinese Lunar calendar, which determines the date of the Lunar New Year, is based off the cycle of the moon and on Earth’s course around the sun (sun’s longitude). A year typically has 12 months, a month is 28 days long, and the year is between 353 and 355 days long. With the exception of a leap year, which has 13 months, making the year have 383-385 days. There are two components to the calendar as well. The Celestial Stem and the Terrestrial branch. The celestial stem is 10 days long. It represents the different suns within that time frame. Each sun, or day, having it’s own name and one of 5 elemental signs. The elemental signs are: wood, earth, fire, water, and metal. The terrestrial branch is what we all know the Chinese Lunar calendar to consist of: the zodiac cycle consisting of 12 animals.

How it works:

The Chinese Lunar Calendar works in a 60-year cycle. It however, does not start on January 1st, like western cultures. It typically starts mid-January to early February.

Starting with the celestial stem (or sun’s name) and ending with the terrestrial branch (zodiac animal). The first sun is Jia (associated with growing wood, earthly). The first zodiac is Zi (rat/mouse). So the first year in the cycle is Jia-Zi. The second sun is Yi (associated with cutting timber) and the second zodiac is Chou (Ox). Therefore, the second year is Yi-Chou. This process goes through the 10 Suns and the 12 zodiacs until it completes a 60-year cycle and ends with the last sun AND the last zodiac.  This 60-year cycle has dated back some 2,000 years.

The Perth Mint has created a short video on how the animals of the zodiac were chosen according to Chinese zodiac history and what has been deemed, The Great Race:

Chinese Zodiac Influence:

According to the Chinese Zodiac, your birth year tells you more than your age. It reflects how your personality is affected by the animal associated with your birth year. The zodiac also determines compatibility of the relationships you will have based on the combination of your zodiac and another person’s. It is said that each zodiac sign has fated personality traits. Some will mesh, and some will not. There are also many other superstitions and beliefs about the signs and years as well. Including life events and festivals. You can check out your Chinese Lunar animal, as provided by the Perth Mint.

The Series:

Each series has its own reflective design representing the Chinese calendar. Many of these coins are offered in 120 oz, 110 oz, 14 oz, 12 oz, and 1 oz options. Also available in 1 Kilo and Proof sets. Although, these can be rarer to find.  All coins are legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and bear an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and the monetary denomination on the obverse.

Lunar Series I:

Beginning in 1996, The Perth Mint rolled out their Lunar Series I in 1996: The Year of the Mouse. Lunar Series I ended in 2007 with the Year of the Pig. This original series began with intricate designs on solid silver or gold. Highly polished designs on a frosted background. All coins in these series are struck from 99.99% pure gold, in bullion quality. While a silver and gold coin option were struck, each precious metal, bears it’s own design.

Lunar Series II:

This series took it’s starring role in 2008 the Year of the Mouse. 12 years after Lunar Series I. Keeping in line with the traditional Chinese Lunar calendar. The Silver series has introduced a limited mintage (3,000) 4-piece, 1 oz  rectangle coin set. It is 99.99% pure silver and comes with a numbered certificate. This series also introduced colored coins – both silver and gold versions, as well as, a 5 oz round coin.

Lunar Series III:

The Australian Gold Lunar Series III debuted in 2020. Marking the 24th Anniversary of Lunar Series I. Some of this series has gemstone inclusions, such as opal. These are typically found on the silver versions of the series.  As well as, rotating charms in the middle of an antiquated silver coin.

These coins have made a popular debut across the globe. Whether it is Lunar Series I, Lunar Series II, or Lunar Series III, enthusiasts and collectors anticipate the release of each commemorative coin.
